Two imposing granite pillars. That’s what greets you here at Sunes stenar. They stand tall and proud outside Malmö’s Stadsbiblioteket (City Library). Sunes stenar, these “stones of Sune,” have a story to tell. Purchased and donated in 1996 by the Malmö Beautification and Planting Association, they found their permanent home here in 1997. But their journey began elsewhere. Originally, Sunes stenar stood outside Malmö Konsthall. There, under the watchful eye of then-konsthall director Sune Nordgren, an exhibition showcasing the works of artist Bård Breivik took place throughout the summer and autumn of 1996. The sculptures, later named in Nordgren’s honor, carry the raw, powerful mark of their creation. The rough-hewn granite bears visible scars. These are the holes drilled to blast the stone from its mountain home, a testament to the forces that shaped them. Look closely. Imagine the power needed to extract these massive forms, and the artistry to then place them here for us to contemplate.
