Gazing up at the Sundial Sculpture, one might think it’s always been a fixture of Cranmer Park. But this Denver landmark has a story of destruction and rebirth. The Sundial Sculpture wasn’t the first to grace this hilltop. The original sundial, a gift from George Cranmer himself in 1941, was based on an ancient Chinese design. It was crafted from quartzite quarried in Lyons, Colorado. The park, initially known as Mountain View Park for its stunning vista of the Rocky Mountains, was later renamed in Cranmer’s honor. He was a visionary behind Denver’s park system, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Winter Park. Tragically, in 1965, vandals dynamited the original sundial. The community, however, rallied to rebuild. In 1966, a replica Sundial Sculpture was installed, a testament to the community’s love for this unique spot. Today, the Sundial Sculpture stands as a beloved gathering place. It’s a backdrop for sunsets, fireworks, proposals, weddings, and children “summiting” its sloping face. The plaza beneath the sundial, built in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration, features a mosaic panorama of the Front Range. This colorful mosaic includes five “fourteeners” – mountains exceeding 14,000 feet in elevation. It serves as a visual gateway to the Rockies, a must-see for tour buses introducing visitors to Denver and the majestic mountains beyond. So, next time you visit the Sundial Sculpture in Cranmer Park, remember its resilient history. It’s more than just a timepiece. It’s a symbol of community spirit and a reminder that even after destruction, beauty can be reborn.
