A gasp escapes your lips. The Sun Gate of Machu Picchu stands before you.

Intipunku or Sun Gate in Quechua is more than a gateway. It’s a portal. It’s the main entrance to the incredible Machu Picchu. This ancient stone structure was not just a way in. It held a deeper meaning for the Inca people. They were avid stargazers. Their lives were guided by the stars.

Inti Punku in Ollantaytambo was also an astronomical observatory. Perfectly aligned with the Pleiades constellation and the Veronica mountain. It marked the winter solstice and the Andean New Year.
