Picture a hidden gem a secret sanctuary nestled high above Ebringen. This is Sumsergarten a place where time seems to stand still. Sumsergarten is more than just a garden. It’s a testament to the unwavering dedication of Dr Erwin Sumser a physician with a profound love for nature.
In 1931 Dr Sumser began acquiring small plots of land. These plots were primarily meadows and copses. He had a vision. He wanted to protect the area’s unique ecosystem. This area would become known as Sumsergarten. He stopped all agricultural activity. He preserved the existing structures including copses stone walls dry-stone walls and open meadows. His actions helped protect rare and endangered plant and animal species.
The land encompassed 7100 square meters. Sumser’s work was pioneering. He was a true conservationist decades ahead of his time. He even paid farmers to maintain the land’s natural state. His efforts were so exceptional that in 1937 Sumsergarten was officially designated a nature reserve. This designation was under the 1935 Reich Nature Conservation Act.
Unfortunately the Sumsergarten faced challenges. From 1962 to 1991 it was completely closed to the public. People were constantly digging up plants and disrupting the landscape. This forced closure was necessary to allow the ecosystem to recover. In 1991 Sumsergarten reopened. It was expanded to 22.8 hectares. The area’s biodiversity flourished under protective measures.
Today volunteers open Sumsergarten to the public during peak blooming seasons. However access is limited to weekends and holidays. Sumsergarten is a treasure trove of biodiversity. It boasts approximately 30 orchid species. It also features other rare plants such as the true mezereon common spring beauty common winter aconite mountain aster and deer tongue. There are also trees like sessile oak and service tree as well as shrubs like serviceberry and wild service tree. Numerous insect and bird species call this protected area home.
The Sumsergarten shows us the impact one person can have. Dr Sumser’s dedication transformed a simple collection of plots into a thriving nature reserve.
