A twelve-foot wingspan. That’s the Summertime Butterfly sculpture. It’s magnificent isn’t it? Right here in the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

David Landis the artist envisioned this. He wanted a temporary display. He contacted Alston Glenn the Garden’s director. They were already planning a new Children’s Garden. Landis’s model convinced them to accept his concept. He built the Summertime Butterfly sculpture on site using square iron beams.

The Summertime Butterfly was originally atop the Butterfly Pavilion. It was a stunning sight. Imagine butterflies taking flight above a vibrant garden. A second butterfly formed the entrance to the Children’s Garden. Landis cleverly used stainless steel. This material reflects the sky and surrounding beauty.

In 2015 the Pavilion was removed. The Summertime Butterfly sculpture found a new home. It was placed on a tall steel pole. This ensured visitors could see it as they entered the garden. Two smaller butterflies were also moved. They now grace the entrance wall of the Children’s Garden restrooms.

The Summertime Butterfly sculpture is more than just art. It tells a story of collaboration and adaptation. It reflects the ongoing evolution of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Each time it has found a new home it has adapted and thrived. It is truly a symbol of Atlanta’s vibrant spirit. A perfect reminder of beauty in transformation.
