Did you know this fort standing before you defended against rebel tribes in 1915? This is Bait Al Falaj Fort. Now, it houses the Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum. It showcases Oman’s military heritage. Sultan Qaboos inaugurated the Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum in 1988. He wanted to document the development of Oman’s military.

The Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum tells the story of Oman’s military history. It displays weapons and uniforms. You will also see military vehicles and musical instruments here. There are even medals, a jet aircraft ejection seat and a parachute.

Bait Al Falaj Fort has a rich history. Sultan Said bin Sultan built it in 1845. It was his royal summer residence. In 1907, it became the Military Headquarters for the Sultan’s Armed Forces. Its location was vital for defense. It commanded mountain passes to Mutrah. The fort has a square central building with a courtyard. Two round towers stand at opposite corners. Steep mountain slopes surround the structure.

Inside the Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum, the weapons gallery awaits. It displays traditional warfare artifacts. Weapons in Omani culture were more than military tools. Islamic tradition prevented men from wearing jewelry. So, they carried weapons. Many matchlocks feature silver and gold inlays. The museum displays traditional Abu Fathilah matchlocks. You can also see ornate powder boxes. Vintage Martini Henry rifles are also present. Ceremonial daggers and swords show precious metal work. A unique set of nine silver-mounted ivory gunpowder chargers is a rare find.

Outside, the military vehicle exhibition awaits. Vintage Land Rovers are on display. One belonged to the Late Sultan Qaboos. Military tanks command attention with their size. Artillery pieces are protected under covers. Command vehicles show advanced communication systems. Aircraft include military planes from around the world. A modern missile-equipped naval vessel represents Oman’s maritime strength. A traditional wooden dhow connects naval past and present. Many vessels let you climb aboard. Dioramas enhance the experience with detailed command posts.

The Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum also features modern military technology. Contemporary defense systems highlight Oman’s military progress since 1970. The exhibits show the transformation to advanced defense systems. Digital displays show modern systems protecting Oman. The communication section displays advanced systems. These include digital modular radios and encrypted transmission systems. Satellite communication equipment is also on display. Training simulators offer a unique look into modern military training. These systems let you step into an Omani soldier’s shoes.
