What architectural marvel blends Omani and Islamic styles? It’s none other than the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. This magnificent structure stands as a testament to the vision of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said. He gifted this grand mosque to Oman in 2001, commemorating three decades of his rule. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque’s creation was a true global endeavor. The sandstone, a beautiful pink hue, traveled all the way from India. Local granite and white marble add to its majestic appearance. This mosque isn’t just grand, it’s Oman’s largest. It can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers. 6,500 can pray in the main musalla. The women’s musalla holds 750. An additional 8,000 can gather in the outer grounds. Even the courtyard and passageways offer extra prayer space. The main prayer hall boasts a breathtaking chandelier. Once the world’s largest, this Italian masterpiece glitters with 24-carat gold plating and 600,000 Swarovski crystals. 1,122 bulbs illuminate the hall, complemented by 34 smaller chandeliers throughout the mosque. Underneath this spectacle lies another marvel. A 21-tonne, hand-loomed prayer carpet. 600 Iranian women dedicated four years to weaving this masterpiece. It features 1.7 million knots and 28 natural vegetable dyes. While no longer the world’s largest, it remains an awe-inspiring work of art. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It houses a double-story library. This library holds a vast collection of over 23,342 books. Topics range from Islamic culture and natural science to fine arts, philosophy, and psychology. There’s even a section for children. The library grows every year, filled with predominantly Arabic and English texts. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque’s five minarets stand tall, symbolizing the five pillars of Islam. The main minaret reaches 90 meters, making it Oman’s tallest structure. The other four minarets reach 45 meters. This mosque embraces visitors of all faiths, welcoming non-Muslims every day except Friday, from 8:30 am to 11 am. Remember to dress modestly, respecting this sacred space.
