How old is this mosque anyway? Take a moment to truly appreciate the age and history of the Sultan Alaaddin Cami. It was completed way back in 1197. It stands as the oldest mosque in all of Ankara. The Sultan Alaaddin Cami wasn’t always known by this name. It was likely commissioned by Muhyiddin Mesud Shah. He was the son of the Seljuk Sultan Kilij Arslan II. The mosque’s design incorporates fragments of older Roman and Byzantine structures. Later, during the reign of Alaeddin Keykubad, the mosque underwent renovations. This is how the Sultan Alaaddin Cami got its current name. Even though it’s called Alaaddin Cami, the mosque witnessed renovations under the Ottoman Sultan Murad II. This has led some sources to call it “Muradiye Camii”. Yet, the name “Alaaddin” stuck with the people and in common usage. Even time couldn’t erase its initial identity.
