Before us rises the Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi Cami a testament to both faith and artistry. It is a place where countless prayers have been whispered into the vast expanse of the heavens. Who was Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi and why is this Cami named after him?
Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi was not an architect nor a sultan. He was a revered 15th-century poet and scholar born in Bursa around 1351 during the reign of Orhan Gazi. Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi is best known for his work *Vesilet\u00fc’n-Necu00e2t*. It translates to “The Path of Salvation”. This is the first and most celebrated Turkish-language Mevlid.
The Mevlid is a poetic narrative of the Prophet Muhammad’s life. It describes his birth and his journey. Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi completed it in 1409. He used a pure Turkish style. The work is divided into six sections. These include Rogation to God and The Birth of our Prophet. They also include The Coming of the First Revelation and The Miracle of the Prophet’s Ascent to Heaven. Also important are His Death and The Forgiving of Sin.
Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi wrote the Mevlid in response to a debate. Some believed there was no superiority among prophets. Su00fcleyman sought to explain Muhammad’s prominence. His lyrical language and intimacy resonated deeply.
For centuries Muslim Turks have read Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi’s Mevlid most often. It is still read today. This happens especially on the Prophet’s birthday. It is also read on other religious days. People read it at circumcisions marriages and memorial ceremonies. The Mevlid is even broadcast live from mosques on Turkish radio and TV on some religious days.
Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi became an imam at the Bursa Ulu Mosque in 1399. Sultan Yu0131ldu0131ru0131m Bayezid noticed his wisdom. He appointed him to this role.
Su00fcleyman u00c7elebi died in 1422 in Bursa. His tomb is located next to the Ulu Cami in Bursa. He was buried near the You011furtlu Baba Zaviyesi after his death.
