From prison grounds to a park’s embrace, that’s the story of Sugar House Park. Sugar House Park sprawls across 110.5 acres in Salt Lake City. It is a beloved green space cherished by locals and visitors. It’s hard to believe that this oasis of tranquility was once the site of Utah’s first state prison. The old stone walls are gone, replaced by rolling hills and open fields. In the mid-20th century, a group of visionaries saw potential in the abandoned prison property. They recognized the opportunity to create a valuable community asset. Through a combination of volunteer efforts and tax funding, Sugar House Park was born. In 1957, the land was entrusted to the Sugar House Park Authority. This non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving and maintaining the park. It works in partnership with Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. The agreement is designed to safeguard Sugar House Park until the year 2055.
