In 1398, the city of Flensburg expanded its reach. It incorporated the wooded area of Rude, the oldest part of what we now know as Südstadt. This area, originally outside the city walls, became a vital source of timber for Flensburg. Südstadt has three distinct districts. These are Martinsberg (including the train station area), Rude, and Peelwatt. Südstadt blends historical charm with modern development. In the 20th century, Südstadt transformed significantly. The city hospital, now gone, and a commercial area with large shops were built. The Förde Park, opened in 1996, is a popular shopping destination at the southern edge of Südstadt. A prominent landmark of Südstadt is the Pauluskirche. Consecrated in 1960, it’s the district’s sole church. The train station area, developed in the 1920s, features historic buildings and the tranquil Carlisle Park. Today, there are ongoing discussions about redesigning the train station area to better connect it with the rest of Südstadt. A planned elevator aims to improve access to the Serpentine walkway, linking the station with Rude. Südstadt offers a fascinating mix of past and present. Whether you visit the historic Pauluskirche, relax in Carlisle Park, or shop at Förde Park, there’s something for everyone.
