The Suburban Collection Showplace has a history that began in a rather unexpected place. Before this grand facility, there was a warehouse. It was once a factory for automobile door guards. Later, it bottled Kahlúa.
In the late 1980s, Irvin Yackness wanted a convention center in Detroit’s suburbs. Blair Bowman leased that vacant warehouse instead of building a new facility. In March 1992, the Novi Expo Center opened after renovations.
In 2000, Bowman revealed plans to relocate the Expo Center. The new facility opened in August 2005. It was first known as the Rock Financial Showplace. This was due to a naming rights deal.
However, Rock Financial wanted to use the name Quicken Loans. So, in 2010, the naming rights were sold to the Suburban Collection. This is a local automobile dealership group. Thus, the Suburban Collection Showplace was born.
Expansions followed. In 2013, a Hyatt Place hotel was built. A new ballroom and meeting space were added. Further expansion in 2019 added more event space.
Today, the Suburban Collection Showplace boasts 340000 square feet of space. It hosts a variety of events. These include public expositions, trade shows and corporate conferences.
The Suburban Collection Showplace is the home of the revived Michigan State Fair since 2012. Motor City Comic Con has been held here since 2011. It attracts many VIPs, merchants, vendors, artists and cosplayers.
The venue offers a full-service kitchen. It can serve meals to 1500 people. There are formal banquet halls. You will also find full-service concession areas. Two large atrium-style entrances provide lobby space.
