Established on March 13, 1960, Suburban Baptist Church has witnessed decades of transformation. Right here at 10501 Chef Menteur Highway, three buildings were erected during the 1960s, a testament to the church’s rapid growth. This expansion continued into the 1970s. However, the end of NASA’s Apollo Space Program brought changes to the surrounding community. Suburban Baptist Church faced new economic, social, cultural, and racial dynamics. The church embraced these shifts, becoming a pioneer in New Orleans as one of the first to cultivate a biracial and multi-ethnic ministry. Suburban Baptist Church prides itself on its diverse congregation. People from all walks of life find a home here. The church strives to break down societal barriers under the guidance of Christ. Hurricane Katrina brought devastation, but Suburban Baptist Church merged with Hopeview Baptist Church. Together, they embarked on a journey of rebuilding and expanding their ministry, further solidifying their identity as a truly multi-ethnic congregation. Suburban Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community dedicated to worshipping God and impacting New Orleans and the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, Louisiana Baptist Convention (LBC), and the New Orleans Baptist Association (NOBA). A tornado in February 2017 caused significant damage to the church and the pastor’s home. Despite the setback, the church community rallied together, demonstrating their resilience and faith. They viewed the disaster as an opportunity to draw closer to God and reaffirm their commitment to serving others. Suburban Baptist Church continues to be a beacon of hope and resilience. It welcomes everyone to join their life-changing Christian journey. Their goal is to impact and renew New Orleans through the teachings of Jesus Christ.
