Atop 108 steps lies Subramanium Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and the vibrant spirit of Mumbai’s South Indian community. Established in the mid-forties in Matunga the Subramanium Samaj Temple began as a small gathering of devotees. These were migrants from South India who wanted to preserve their traditions and faith. Their humble beginnings in a house eventually led to the grand temple we see today.

The temple’s journey to Chhedanagar Chembur is a story in itself. After much searching they found three plots of land. A Prasnam a kind of divine consultation confirmed the suitability of the location. It was revealed that this area was once a dense forest where sages performed Tapasya ancient spiritual practices.

Construction was a monumental task. The temple’s design is a unique blend of ancient and modern styles. A Christian architect CSK Raj designed the structure incorporating elements from traditional Tamil Nadu temple architecture. Mr Abbas Jusdanwala a Bohra Muslim contributed to blending the design seamlessly. The main deity is Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Devasena. There are also shrines for Ganesha Dakshinamurthi Sastha Guruvayurappan and Durga. The Navagrahas also have a prominent place.

The temple’s construction involved the transporting of 800 tons of granite from Mahabalipuram. Skilled artisans from South India worked tirelessly to create the beautiful idols. The 4.5 ft tall idol of Lord Muruga is particularly noteworthy. The temple has undergone several Kumbhabhishekams consecration ceremonies. The fourth one took place in 2011.

The Subramanium Temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a cultural center. It is a symbol of religious harmony. It reflects the unity found within Mumbai’s diverse population. The temple stands as a powerful reminder of faith’s enduring power. It’s a testament to the dedication and vision of those who built it. It’s also a symbol of hope and spiritual awakening for many.
