Can you imagine a university that was once a royal garden? Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, a bustling hub of learning today, boasts a history that stretches back to the reign of King Rama V. This land, once a verdant retreat for the royal family and known as “Uttanyan Sunandha” or “Sunandha Royal Garden,” was a place of tranquility and beauty. But like a hidden gem, its true potential would later be uncovered. King Rama VI’s reign saw the construction of 32 buildings within these hallowed grounds. One of the most magnificent buildings housed Princess Saisavali Bhiromya, a royal consort, who established a girls’ school called “Nibhakarn”. Here, young ladies of the royal court and nobility learned the refined etiquette and manners expected of them. The Siamese Revolution of 1932 sparked an exodus from this royal enclave. Fearful for their safety, many royal family members and courtiers abandoned the place. Suan Sunandha, once resplendent, fell into disrepair. Then, during the reign of King Rama VIII, a revival began. In 1937, the government decided to repurpose this historical park into a girls’ school called “Sunandha Wittayalai School”. Though it began as a lower-level teaching institution, its status was elevated in 1975, becoming “Suan Sunandha Teacher’s College” under the Teacher Education Act. This further expanded its role in education, offering higher, secondary, and elementary levels of instruction. On February 14, 1992, King Bhumibol, affectionately called King Rama IX, bestowed the name “”Rajabhat Institute”” on all teacher colleges in the nation. Thus, “Suan Sunandha Teacher’s College” became “Rajabhat Institute Suan Sunandha”. In 2004, the act establishing “Rajabhat University” was enacted. This signified a new era for Suan Sunandha, transforming it into the dynamic institution it is today – Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, a university dedicated to local development and intellectual growth. Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, a university steeped in history and dedicated to the future, stands proudly as a testament to the transformation and resilience of Thailand itself.
