Gazing upon this sculpture, can you sense the echoes of a bygone era? This, my friends, is the Stützpfeiler des früheren Friedrichstadtpalasts Sculpture. It stands as a tribute to the original Friedrichstadt-Palast, a grand entertainment venue with a history as vibrant as the city itself. The sculpture was unveiled in September 2019, marking the centennial celebration of the Friedrichstadt-Palast’s rich legacy. The original Friedrichstadt-Palast, which stood just a short distance from here, began its life humbly as a market hall in 1867. Imagine the bustling crowds, the vendors hawking their wares. But just six years later, the hall was transformed into a magnificent circus arena, capable of holding thousands of spectators. It was a place of wonder, of daring feats and exotic animals, captivating audiences from all walks of life. In 1919, the legendary impresario Max Reinhardt acquired the building, envisioning it as a stage for grand theatrical productions. He renamed it the Großes Schauspielhaus, the “Grand Theatre.” This marked a new chapter in the building’s history. It became a haven for the performing arts, a place where the magic of theatre unfolded. During Berlin’s vibrant 1920s, the Großes Schauspielhaus truly lived up to its name, hosting internationally acclaimed acts like the Comedian Harmonists. It was a beacon of culture and entertainment, drawing crowds eager to witness the spectacle within its walls. Sadly, the Großes Schauspielhaus was forced to close during the Nazi era. After the war, and with the division of Berlin, the building was finally christened the Friedrichstadt-Palast. In East Berlin, it continued its legacy, welcoming national and international stars. The likes of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald graced its stage, filling the hall with their unforgettable music. However, time and circumstance took their toll. By 1980, the building’s foundations had deteriorated to such an extent that it could no longer safely host performances. The curtain fell, and the Friedrichstadt-Palast closed its doors. But its spirit lived on. A new Friedrichstadt-Palast was built on Friedrichstraße, the very spot where we stand today. The Stützpfeiler des früheren Friedrichstadtpalasts Sculpture, then, stands as a poignant reminder. It evokes the memory of a beloved venue that played a vital role in Berlin’s cultural landscape. It’s a testament to the enduring power of entertainment, and the ability of art to transcend time and circumstance.
