“How long do you think it would take to travel to Duisburg in 1807?” This unassuming stone, the Stundenstein, holds the answer. This isn’t just any rock. The Stundenstein is a historical milestone. It once stood in front of the Benrather Rathaus, marking the time it took to travel to neighboring cities, not in kilometers, but in hours. That’s why it’s called a “Stundenstein”, literally “hour stone”. This Stundenstein, made from basalt lava in 1807, indicated that a journey to Duisburg would take a traveler four hours. Imagine traveling by horse-drawn carriage or even on foot! This Stundenstein is a rare survivor of a bygone era. Very few of these stones still exist in Germany. In 1991, it was moved to its current location here on Bonner Strasse. You’ll notice a bronze plaque next to it. This was added after the relocation. It depicts the course of the Rhine through Düsseldorf, highlighting the names of the adjacent districts. The Stundenstein provides a unique glimpse into Düsseldorf’s past, reminding us how travel and timekeeping have evolved over the centuries.
