The Stummhaus, also known as the Neuer Stahlhof, stands proudly on Breite Straße in Düsseldorf. This isn’t just another building. It’s a testament to the Stumm brothers, giants in the German steel industry. They commissioned this building, seeking a headquarters that reflected their power and influence. The Stummhaus, completed between 1922 and 1924, is a prime example of Brick Expressionism. Its architect, Paul Bonatz, masterfully combined function and artistic expression. Look closely at the facade. The triangular, vertical pillars aren’t just decorative. They create a strong vertical emphasis. Bonatz himself referred to this style as “office building Gothic.” These pillars visually convey the building’s upward thrust, symbolizing the Stumm brothers’ ambition and the rising power of German industry. The Stummhaus originally housed the headquarters of the Stumm-Konzern. Later, in 1928, it became the central office for the Vereinigte Stahlwerke, further solidifying its importance in the German steel industry. The Stummhaus survived the bombings of World War II, though it did suffer damage. Between 1949 and 1951, the building underwent extensive restoration. Today, the Stummhaus continues to stand tall.
