Picture this a bustling neighborhood west of Freiburg’s historic heart. This is Stühlinger a place transformed from marshland to a vibrant district. Stühlinger’s story begins long ago when farmers used the Mittelheuweg to reach the Münster market. They traversed the path now followed by the tram. The Lords of Stühlingen owned much of this agricultural land.

Stühlinger’s growth exploded in the late 19th century. The 1845 Baden main line between Offenburg and Basel spurred its development. The new Freiburg train station boosted cargo transport. The Franco-Prussian War’s end and the German Reich’s founding in 1871 fueled further expansion.

Freiburg built three streets parallel to the railway tracks. Five crossroads created a new building site called Hinterm Bahnhof. The area wasn’t named Stühlinger until 1886. Field names like Eschholz and Stühlingen reflected the area’s history and the influence of the Lords of Stühlingen.

Development boomed after 1875. A pedestrian subway and a bridge linked Stühlinger to the city center. This bridge the Wiwilíbrücke originally Stühlinger Brücke connects to the church square. The Sacred Heart Church a stunning Limburg Cathedral-style building became the district’s focal point. Two schools one for boys and one for girls were built behind it.

Numerous businesses thrived in Stühlinger. Brenzinger & Cie a building company Louis Sinner’s brewery and Lederle a pump company were among them. Theodor Kromer’s lock company Klingele’s tinder company and M Welte & Söhne’s pipe organ and orchestrion company also called Stühlinger home. The city’s main cemetery opened in 1872. The university medical center expanded starting in 1926.

A Lutheran church completed in 1916 was destroyed in WWII and rebuilt modestly in the 1950s. A mental hospital added in 1877 sparked debate about its impact on the district’s image. After a 1944 bombing a light railway moved debris to the Flückiger gravel quarry. High phosphorous levels in the resulting Flückigersee lake are believed to stem from bomb remnants.

Post-WWII Stühlinger continued westward. St Joseph’s Catholic church and the Church of the Holy Cross were built. A vocational school building authorities and the employment agency established themselves here. A tumor clinic and student dormitories were also added.

Today Stühlinger boasts many preschools and schools. The Hebelschule is an elementary and lower secondary school. The Hansjakobschule is a secondary school. Both are near the Sacred Heart Church. The Max-Weber-Schule focuses on business careers. The University Medical Center has a nursing school.

Stühlinger is a vibrant blend of old and new. Its memorials remember fallen soldiers deported Jews and victims of the Nazi regime. The church square is a lively gathering spot. Eschholzpark features a giant garden hose a quirky landmark. Stühlinger’s history is layered into every street every building. It is a community that has transformed and thrived. It stands as a testament to Freiburg’s resilience and growth.
