Tucked away in West Roxbury, the Stratford Street United Methodist Church has a fascinating story to tell. It’s a story of community, resilience, and unexpected unions. The Stratford Street United Methodist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the power of unity and the enduring spirit of helping others.
The Stratford Street United Methodist Church, as it stands today, is the result of a merger between two distinct congregations: the Stratford Street Baptist Church and the West Roxbury Congregational Church. The Stratford Street Baptist Church, established in 1904, found its home on the corner of Anawan and Stratford Streets. Its English Country Style building, designed by Calvin Kiessling, was hailed as “an Ornament to The West Roxbury District” by the Boston Daily Globe in 1907. Years later, in 1954, Memorial Hall was added.
Meanwhile, the West Roxbury Congregational Church, founded in 1891, had its own prominent location at the corner of Mount Vernon and Centre Streets. Its tower, the highest point in the area, housed the town clock. Tragedy struck in 1973 when a fire destroyed the Congregational Church. The Stratford Street Baptist Church opened its doors to the displaced congregation. Faced with the daunting task of rebuilding, the two congregations began to explore the possibility of uniting.
In 1977, the land where the Congregational Church once stood was deeded to the Trustees of the Boston Public Library. Today, it houses an addition to the West Roxbury Branch Library. A piece of the Congregational Church lives on at Stratford Street. In 1979, its bell was installed in the steeple of the Stratford Street United Methodist Church. That same year, the two congregations officially merged, becoming the Stratford Street United Church. Despite their different denominational backgrounds, the merger was successful due to shared values of outreach missions and progressive roles for women. Through retreats and listening sessions, they forged a new identity as a united and progressive church.
Today, the Stratford Street United Methodist Church continues its mission of service to the community, embracing a diverse group of people. It serves as a home for Iglesia Cristiana “Nueva Vida” and hosts various community programs and activities. From its historical beginnings to its present-day role, the Stratford Street United Methodist Church stands as a beacon of community and service in West Roxbury.
