Can you imagine a high school football team winning a district title after their school building was condemned? That’s exactly what happened to the Stratford Spartans in 2006. Their school, Stratford High School, is just a stone’s throw away from Stratford Park. In 2004, the school was found to have massive structural problems. Bricks were literally falling out of the building. The campus had to be closed for repairs. Students were temporarily moved to another high school, Westchester Academy. Ironically, Stratford had absorbed many Westchester students years earlier when Westchester High School closed. After a year of displacement, Stratford High School reopened in 2005. Just one year later, the Spartans claimed victory in the district football championship. The Spartans’ story is a testament to their resilience and determination and mirrors the spirit of Stratford Park itself. This beloved park serves as a gathering place for the community. It’s a place where people come together to relax, play, and create lasting memories.
