Whispers of a welcoming sign greet you. “Skeerey Vraddan / Ta’n Strang bannaghey nyn mea” it reads in Manx and English. Welcome to Strang.

Strang a small settlement in Braddan parish is almost touching Douglas the island’s largest town. It also neighbours Union Mills. Its close proximity to Noble’s Hospital the island’s only general hospital is a defining feature. Did you know the hospital’s land was originally bought in 1862 for an asylum? Ballamona Hospital opened its doors in 1868. This small area holds a surprising amount of history.

Imagine Strang in 2017. The Braddan Parish Commissioners were seeking ideas for a community centre. The field opposite Strang Stores was the chosen site. The plans quickly gained traction and approval. Today this visionary project stands complete. The Roundhouse a state-of-the-art community centre opened in January 2024. It houses a cafe sports hall pharmacy nursery and the local commissioners’ offices.

Strang’s connection to the Manx language is strong. Many place names here reflect this heritage. Even if a place name isn’t originally Manx a Manx translation will always be added to signs. This commitment to preserving the language is heartwarming.

For a bit of active fun head to Cronk Grianagh park. It boasts the island’s only concrete urban skatepark a BMX track and a playground. This is a fun spot for all ages and abilities. The Heritage Trail also briefly passes Strang. This old railway line offers a glimpse into the area’s past and connects Strang to a wider network of trails.

Strang is more than just a location. It’s a vibrant community. It is a place blending history modernity and a deep sense of island identity. It welcomes you. Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere of this unique place. Enjoy your time in Strang.
