Originally a neglected area near the Warnow River the land underwent a dramatic transformation. In 2003 Rostock hosted the Internationale Gartenbauausstellung the IGA. This international horticultural exhibition transformed the site. The IGA was much more than just a flower show. It was a significant infrastructure project for the entire city.
The IGA spurred the construction of vital transportation projects. These included the Warnow Tunnel and improvements to the city’s infrastructure. The exhibition brought about the creation of a large landscape park and event venue. Nearly 100 million euros were invested.
Imagine 32 nations showcasing their unique gardens. The park hosted 275 conferences and congresses attracting over 17000 participants. A highlight was the Weidendom the world’s largest living structure. Built from willow branches it’s a testament to human ingenuity. It even hosted Sunday services and events.
The IGA attracted 2.6 million visitors. Over half were not from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A third were overnight tourists boosting the region’s economy by over 50 million euros. Despite its success the IGA incurred a 20 million euro deficit due to poor financial oversight.
After the IGA attempts to maintain the park as a tourist hotspot failed. The city then made a wise decision. It opened the gates of the IGA-Park to the public. Since April 2019 access has been free.
Today Strand IGA-Park Rostock thrives as a place of recreation and events. It’s a testament to the transformative power of vision and collaboration.
