A beacon of hope, Straight Street Baptist Church has stood tall in Detroit. It has witnessed decades of change. Today, we uncover its remarkable story. Straight Street Baptist Church wasn’t always at its current location. Its roots trace back to the early 20th century, 1914 to be exact. The church, originally known as Temple Baptist Church, began its journey on 14th Street in Detroit. In the mid-20th century, Temple Baptist Church embarked on a series of relocations. In 1952, the congregation moved to Grand River near Livernois. Their former home became the Straight Gate International Church. The church then moved to its location on W. Chicago in 1968. This era marked a significant turning point for the church. It transitioned from its segregationist past. Under the leadership of Truman Dollar, the church desegregated in 1985. Unfortunately, Dollar’s tenure ended in controversy. A possible sex scandal led to his forced departure. Sadly, he later committed suicide. These events impacted the church, its membership declining from 5,000 to 1,500. Seeking a fresh start, the church relocated to Plymouth near M-14 in 1997. It also adopted a new name: Northridge Church. This move severed ties with the Baptist denomination. The story of Straight Street Baptist Church is intertwined with another historic Detroit landmark. King Solomon Baptist Church, which once housed Temple Baptist, became a hub for the Civil Rights movement. Its auditorium hosted prominent figures like Benjamin Mays and Martin Luther King Jr. Even Malcolm X delivered his impactful “Message to the Grass Roots” speech within its walls. This connection adds another layer of historical significance to Straight Street’s story. Today, Northridge Church thrives with over 12,000 members. Its journey, marked by relocations, controversy, and growth. It stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of faith and community in Detroit.
