Imagine Kaiser Wilhelm II with a ruler. He tried to draw a straight line for a road. The Stößenseebrücke stands here today. It is a testament to a slight detour.
The Stößenseebrücke isn’t just steel and stone. It’s a landmark that tells a story of Berlin’s ambition. It reveals the challenges of landscape and cost. This bridge connects Wilhelmstadt with Westend. It forms part of Heerstraße. Heerstraße is federal highway 2/5.
Back in the early 1900s, Berlin was growing. The city sought a direct route to Döberitz military training area. This led to the Döberitzer Heerstraße project. It was an ambitious plan. It aimed to link Berlin Palace directly to the training grounds.
Bridging the Havel lowlands became a major hurdle. The area included the Stößensee. The Stößensee is an old arm of the Havel. Planners considered several options. One option was a 250-meter bridge over the Scharfe Lanke.
Cost became a deciding factor. The straight route would have cost 16.9 million marks. Ten million alone would be for the Scharfe Lanke bridge. A slimmed-down version still cost 11.2 million marks.
The chosen path bent slightly. It left the Scharfe Lanke untouched. This deviation reduced costs significantly. The Stößenseebrücke, including the dam and Frey Bridge, cost 2.54 million marks. The Stößenseebrücke itself accounted for 850,000 marks. The dam cost 550,000 marks.
The planners wanted to impact nature gently. They wanted to affect the landscape as little as possible. Adolf Frey noted landscape planning reasons. The small Stößenseebrücke with the dam was preferred. A large bridge over the entire lake would impact the landscape more.
Construction wasn’t without problems. In 1907, the Berliner Tageblatt reported an issue. Fifty meters of dam had sunk. The swampy recess of the Havel seemed an unfathomable opponent.
Ernst Friedel later noted subsoil conditions. Solid ground was found at 35 meters depth. He suggested a longer bridge might have been cheaper. Around one million cubic meters of soil were required for the embankment.
Karl Bernhard designed the Stößenseebrücke. He aimed for pleasing iron bridges without architects. Aesthetics came from the interplay of static aspects. Kaiser Wilhelm II chose a system of cantilever girders. It had connected towing girders.
The bridge support on the Grunewald side resulted in a height of about 20 meters. The supporting structure was arranged under the roadway. The designers used a finger construction. This adjusted the Grunewald support for changes.
The mighty Grunewald pillar consists of four supporting pillars. They are stiffened by reinforced concrete vaults. The pillar widens into a viewing platform. The central pillar carries a total load of 3900 tons.
Construction began in 1908. It finished a year later. Two massive granite gates announce the bridge. They open steep steps. These lead down to the Havelchaussee.
The Stößenseebrücke suffered damage during World War II. It was likely blown up in 1945. This was to prevent Soviet troops from advancing. Reconstruction took place between 1948 and 1951.
During Germany’s division, transit traffic to Hamburg flowed over the Stößenseebrücke. Today, around 70,000 vehicles cross it daily.
Climbers use the 20-meter-high stone wall for practice. Climbing is not permitted. It was tolerated as recently as 2011.
The Stößenseebrücke stands as more than a crossing. It is a testament to Berlin’s past. It echoes with stories of engineering feats. It is a silent observer of the city’s continuous evolution.
