Have you ever wondered how the Story Bridge got its name? It’s a story that goes back to the 1940s when this grand steel cantilever bridge was finally completed. John Douglas Story, a prominent public servant at the time, had always advocated for the bridge’s construction. Story Bridge wasn’t its original name, though. Imagine a bustling city trying to cross the river, needing an efficient way to connect its two halves. It would have been a dream for many Brisbane residents to have a bridge built over the river to make journeys quicker and easier, and this dream had been around for decades. Even while the Victoria Bridge was being built in 1865, people were already petitioning for a bridge connecting Brisbane’s CBD to Kangaroo Point! It’s clear that having a bridge over the Brisbane River was an important issue for the city. But construction on the Story Bridge didn’t begin until 1935. The bridge was initially called the Jubilee Bridge, in honor of King George V, until it was officially opened in 1940. After completion, it was given the name that would carry it through history, and that name, my friends, is Story Bridge. Today, it carries three lanes of traffic in each direction, alongside a shared pedestrian and cycle way. It’s still a vital part of the Brisbane cityscape, connecting Fortitude Valley to Kangaroo Point. The next time you see Story Bridge, remember its journey from a dream to a beloved city landmark.
