“Flood control”. That’s the silent promise of the Storm Pump Station. It stands here in Detroit. Many drivers pass it daily. They likely never notice it. Yet, this station plays a crucial role in keeping our highways safe during heavy rains.
The Storm Pump Station. It’s more than just a building. It’s a vital piece of infrastructure. This station prevents dangerous flooding on our roads. Imagine driving down the highway during a storm. The rain is coming down hard. Without this station, the road could quickly become submerged.
Here’s how the Storm Pump Station works. Pumps inside the station remove storm water. They move it from low-lying highway sections. Gravity alone can’t drain these areas. The pumps send the water into the local drainage system. They are powered by electricity. The pumps cycle on and off during storms. This keeps the water moving efficiently.
But what happens if there’s a mechanical failure? Water can back up on the highways. Motorists could encounter dangerous standing water. Temperature spikes can also affect the pumps. For safety reasons, they might shut off. Heavy rains can even cause storm water to back up into the station. This can cause the pumps to shut down to protect the electrical systems. Road debris can clog the pump pipes too. This is a big problem.
The maintenance of the Storm Pump Station is critical. The underground station typically has three levels. The uppermost level contains the large metal pipes. Storm water flows through these pipes. It goes on its way to the local drainage system. You can also see the tops of the large pumps. An electrical panel sits here along with a float. This float activates the pumps when the water rises.
The lower two levels are cramped. They can be dangerous. These levels are considered confined spaces. Workers need special training to enter. This is where the water enters the station. Trash racks keep highway debris away from the pumps.
Like the Conner Creek pump station, the Storm Pump Station requires constant attention. Aging infrastructure poses the biggest problem. A recent assessment of metro area pump stations revealed concerning results. Only a small percentage of the equipment was in good condition.
The Michigan Department of Transportation has a goal. They want to improve the condition of the pump houses. They plan to replace many stations with gravity-fed tunnels. Storm water from highway drains will flow naturally toward the local drainage system. This plan will first be initiated along I-75.
