Can a single, unassuming plaque hold a lifetime of sorrow and resilience? Here at the Stolperstein Erich Graupner Plaque, a small brass square set into the pavement on Rahlstedter Straße, we uncover a story of persecution and courage. The Stolperstein Erich Graupner Plaque, a stumbling stone, is a poignant reminder of a life tragically cut short by the Nazi regime. It commemorates Erich Graupner, born in 1905. He lived here, at what was once Lübeckerstraße 47. The plaque, a part of a larger project across Europe, serves as a stark reminder of the individual lives lost during the Holocaust. Erich Graupner was a hairdresser, a profession he excelled at. His former employer praised his skills, stating that Graupner worked at a salon frequented by Hamburg’s elite. But Graupner’s life was marked by his homosexuality, something he confided in his former employer’s wife, expressing his pain at being different. He was repeatedly arrested for his sexual orientation. His first arrest came in 1937 after he confided in an undercover police officer about his struggles. This led to his imprisonment in the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp. He faced trial and was sentenced to over a year in prison. He was arrested again in 1939 and, following another trial, sentenced to fifteen months. Upon his release, fearing further persecution, he applied for “voluntary castration” as a desperate attempt to avoid being sent to a concentration camp. However, his application seems to have been in vain. He was transferred to Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1941. A letter sent from Niederhagen concentration camp near Paderborn in March 1942 marks his last communication with his family. A month later, his mother received the devastating news of his death, allegedly shot while attempting to escape. The Stolperstein Erich Graupner Plaque, a simple brass square, carries the weight of this tragic story. It stands as a testament to Graupner’s resilience in the face of persecution and the ultimate sacrifice he made. It’s a reminder for us to never forget the victims of the Holocaust and to stand against intolerance and discrimination in all its forms.
