Overlooking the East River, Stony Point, a once-isolated hill in the Bronx, has witnessed dramatic transformations. This unassuming point, the southernmost tip of the Bronx, played a significant role in the city’s development. Imagine Stony Point in the 1840s, a lonely stone house amidst a sprawling salt marsh, giving the area its name. This marsh, flooded during high tides and storms, effectively made Stony Point an island. The arrival of the railroad in 1872, connecting the South Bronx to New England, marked a shift in Stony Point’s destiny. As the city expanded, plans emerged to extend Manhattan’s grid northward, encompassing this once-remote location. By the late 19th century, two yacht clubs, the Knickerbocker and Stuyvesant, had established themselves near Stony Point. These clubs, later forced to relocate due to increasing industrialization, speak to a bygone era of leisure and recreation. The transformation continued into the early 20th century. Factories and warehouses replaced the yacht clubs, and a ferry connected Stony Point to the hospital on North Brother Island. A curious detail from this time is a tunnel, built in 1915, connecting a power plant on Stony Point to another in Astoria, Queens. This tunnel, likely intended for gas mains rather than public use, hints at the area’s growing industrial importance. Even a grand vision for an International Exposition at Stony Point in 1883 ultimately gave way to the more practical need for power plants to fuel the city’s expansion. These power plants, with their stepped rooflines echoing the Dutch style of old New Amsterdam, became a dominant feature of the landscape. Today, the pier at the end of East 132nd Street, once a bustling ferry terminal, stands deteriorated and fenced off. However, the potential for Stony Point’s revitalization remains. Proposals for waterfront parks, greenways, and natural restoration offer a glimpse of a future where this historic point reclaims its place as a vibrant part of the Bronx.
