This stone has a story to tell. It comes from the original Brisbane Hospital Tower Block, the very first hospital in Brisbane. This imposing structure, built in 1867, stood proud for a century before being decommissioned.
This stone, however, wasn’t lost to the dust of time. It was saved by Miss E.A.S Abell OBE, the General Matron of the hospital. In 1969, when the Tower Block was demolished, she carefully collected this very stone. It’s a testament to her dedication to this hospital, a small piece of history she wanted to preserve.
In 2017, the stone was placed right here in this park, where it now stands as a reminder of the long and noble history of the original Brisbane Hospital. It’s a silent witness to countless lives touched by this landmark – a quiet testament to healing and hope.
Imagine the hands that cared for patients, the whispers exchanged, the relief found within those walls. This piece of stone holds a treasure of memories, a palpable link to the past.
Now, as you look upon this simple stone, let it transport you back to a time of early healthcare, to those who dedicated their lives to helping others. It’s a powerful reminder that history lives on, even in the smallest of fragments.
