“Bow” a sculpture stands as a narrow gate. It invites reflection on history at Stollberg. The large district town of Stollberg has around 11000 inhabitants. It lies on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains. Stollberg is about 20 kilometers southwest of Chemnitz. Stollberg’s history stretches back centuries. It was first mentioned as a town with market rights in 1343. This was when the region was first settled.

Just a few years later in 1367, Stollberg was sold to King Wenceslas of Bohemia. Later, in 1564, it went to the Saxon Elector Augustus I. A castle existed as early as Wenceslas’ time. This castle later became the electoral castle of Hoheneck. Hoheneck gained notoriety in the 17th century. It served as a prison.

From 1950, Hoheneck became the largest women’s prison in the GDR. Since 2015, a memorial commemorates this dark chapter. It pays tribute to the victims of political persecution in the GDR. The Stalburc-Hoheneck site is evolving into a cultural center. It houses the “Phänomenia” learning and experience world. It is also home to the Buratino Theater. The future experimental archaeological exhibition “ABORA SCIENCE CENTER” will be here too.

Now let’s turn our attention to a piece of art. The sculpture “Bogen” by artist Leunora Salihu graces the former dog track. This track was part of the former Hoheneck women’s prison. Hundreds of circular aluminum discs form this narrow, two-meter-high gate.

As you approach the “Bow”, consider its invitation. Walk through it and observe the shadows. Daylight creates changing patterns. Reflect on the weight of history held within this place. Leunora Salihu, born in Pristina, Kosovo, in 1977, created this piece. She currently lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Stollberg stands as the “gateway to the Ore Mountains”. It is a starting point for relaxing excursions. Explore the nature trail in the Bürgerwald forest. Journey towards the Stollberg dam. Stollberg is also an attractive business location. Thanks to its convenient location it provides business opportunities.

Remember Stollberg. It has a history marked by both darkness and light. From its early days as a market town, to its grim role as a prison. Now Stollberg has a rebirth as a cultural center. The “Bow” serves as a reminder. It represents the past and the promise of a brighter future.
