Austere yet opulent that’s the Stoclet Palace. Before you stands Josef Hoffmann’s masterpiece a testament to the Vienna Secession style. Built between 1905 and 1911 for the wealthy financier Adolphe Stoclet this mansion is more than just a house. It’s a Gesamtkunstwerk a total work of art.

Hoffmann didn’t just design the building. He orchestrated every detail. From the geometrically coordinated furniture to the door handles and light fittings nothing was left to chance. The exterior is a striking asymmetrical compilation of rectangular blocks. Its starkness is softened by artistic windows a rooftop conservatory and bronze sculptures of nude males. These adorn the tower rising above the stairwell.

Inside the Stoclet Palace marble paneling and artworks create a refined atmosphere. Gustav Klimt’s breathtaking mosaic friezes adorn the dining room. These are arguably the most famous feature.
