Picture this a vast expanse of rolling hills and open meadows. This is Stiftungsland Schäferhaus Nord in Flensburg. A former military training ground it’s now a thriving nature reserve. Imagine the sounds of hooves on the soft earth. Galloway cattle and Konik horses roam freely.

The Stiftungsland Schäferhaus Nord is more than just a pretty landscape. It has a rich and complex history. Once the site of the Jagerslust farm it witnessed both prosperity and tragedy. The Wolff family a Jewish family ran a large farm there. They even established a kibbutz. Young Jewish people trained for emigration to Palestine. Their idyllic life ended brutally on Kristallnacht in 1938. The Nazis destroyed the farm. The Wolff family scattered. Some perished in concentration camps. Today Stolpersteine memorial stones remember them.

After the destruction the Wehrmacht took over. They expanded the area. They used it for military purposes. The area became a training ground for the Bundeswehr after World War II. It remained so until 1997. The Bundeswehr even used some of the existing roads.

Then in 1998 the Stiftung Naturschutz Schleswig-Holstein stepped in. They transformed the scarred land. They created a haven for wildlife and nature. Today the Stiftungsland Schäferhaus Nord is a testament to resilience. It’s a place where nature reclaims its space. It’s also a memorial to a tragic past. The peaceful grazing animals now share the land with reconstructed Bronze and Iron Age burial mounds.

Walk the paths. Discover information boards explaining the area’s history and ecology. Follow the ancient Ochsenweg where medieval oxen were driven to market. Notice the horns placed along the way. They show the length of the cattle herds. The Stiftungsland Schäferhaus Nord offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical reflection. It’s a journey through time. It shows nature’s ability to heal. It’s a place of remembrance. It’s a truly captivating destination.
