Contemplate those ancient stones. The Stiftskirche Sankt Peter stands as a testament to Salzburg’s rich history. Founded by St. Rupert in 696 AD, Stiftskirche Sankt Peter is one of the oldest monasteries in the German-speaking area. It boasts a continuous history.

St. Rupert is even buried here. The original structure dates back to the Romanesque period. Yet, it was completely renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries. This gave it the Baroque style we see today.

Imagine Mozart himself within these walls. In 1783, his Mass in C Minor premiered right here at Stiftskirche Sankt Peter. His wife, Constanze, sang the lead soprano role. Mozart often directed the orchestra and choir at Stiftskirche Sankt Peter. He even played its organ.

As you step inside Stiftskirche Sankt Peter, notice the mix of styles. The west portal showcases Romanesque vaulted arches from around 1240. The basilica layout hints at its Romanesque origins. The Late-Baroque style of the 1770s overwhelms the senses. Side aisles burst with Rococo paintings.

Seek out the Rupert altar. Behind it lies the Felsengrab. This is believed to be St. Rupert’s final resting place.

Art treasures abound within Stiftskirche Sankt Peter. Admire altar paintings by Kremser Schmidt. Find the Salzburg Madonna from the early 15th century in the left chancel. Don’t miss the side chapel near the entrance. It holds an unusual crèche. It portrays the Flight into Egypt. It shows the Massacre of the Innocents.

Stiftskirche Sankt Peter’s history is closely tied to music. Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor was scheduled to premiere here. This was probably on October 26, 1783. His wife Constanze was the first soprano. The work remained incomplete though.

Beside the altar are the tombs of Mozart’s sister Maria Anna Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn. St. Vitalis is also entombed at Stiftskirche Sankt Peter.

Note the abbey’s legendary Weinkeller Restaurant. Monks founded it a thousand years ago. It serves traditional Austrian food.

Around 1147, the Romanesque abbey church was erected. It was built at the site of a Carolingian church. The church was dedicated to Saint Peter. Between 1760 and 1782, the interior was remodeled under Abbot Beda Seeauer. Martin Johann Schmidt created the high altar.

Stiftskirche Sankt Peter is more than just a church. It is a living testament to Salzburg’s history. Its blend of architectural styles tells a story. Its connection to Mozart enriches its legacy. Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. Stiftskirche Sankt Peter continues to inspire all who enter.
