How many layers of history do you think are stacked here at Stiftskapelle? This chapel whispers tales of emperors and their ambitions. It reflects Nuremberg’s enduring importance.

Stiftskapelle stands as a testament to medieval power. It highlights Nuremberg’s significant role in the Holy Roman Empire. The castle’s story is intertwined with that of the city. It showcases the shifting tides of power.

The first fortified buildings arose around 1000. Over time, three major construction periods shaped its appearance. The Salian kings started it all. The Hohenstaufen emperors then built a new castle. Finally, reconstruction and modifications occurred in the late medieval centuries.

Nuremberg Castle became an important imperial castle. German kings and emperors stayed here often. They journeyed from one castle to the next. Each ruler left their mark.

The castle is divided into three sections. There is the Imperial castle. Then there’s the former Burgraves’ castle. Lastly, the buildings erected by the Imperial City complete the structure.

The Imperial Chapel is the most important building here. It showcases Romanesque architecture. Built around 1200, it features two chapels. They are stacked one above the other. An opening in the ceiling connects them. This design represents the hierarchical levels of medieval society.

Access to the castle is through the Heavenly Gate. This gate leads into the outer courtyard. The Sinwell Tower stands tall. It was built in the 13th century. Its name comes from its cylindrical form. “Sinwell” means “perfectly round” in Middle High German. In the 1560s, the tower’s height increased. A further floor and a pavilion roof were added.

Inside the courtyard lies the Deep Well. It ensured a protected water supply. This was vital during sieges. The well’s shaft plunges over 50 meters into the rock.

The Burgraves’ Castle stood between the Sinwell Tower and the Luginsland. After its destruction in 1420, the city purchased its remains. Little is left of it now.

The Luginsland tower allowed the city to monitor the Burgraves’ Castle. Relations between the city and the Burgraves had deteriorated. The Imperial Stables once served as a granary. Built in the late 15th century, the ground floor housed stables.

The castle lost importance after the Thirty Years’ War. In the 19th century, interest in the medieval period revived. Modifications were made. During the Nazi period, the castle was “returned to its original state.” World War II caused massive damage. Rebuilding and restoration took about thirty years.

Today, Nuremberg Castle stands as a symbol. It represents the power of the Holy Roman Empire. It also highlights Nuremberg’s significant role. The castle has witnessed centuries of change. Its stones hold countless stories. As you explore, imagine the emperors. Imagine the knights and the bustling city below. Their echoes linger within these walls.
