Here at the Northwest entrance of Citizens Bank Park stands a bronze giant. This is the Steve Carlton Statue. It honors one of baseball’s most dominant left-handed pitchers.
The Steve Carlton Statue was unveiled on December 4, 2004. It commemorates Carlton’s remarkable career with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1972 to 1986. Zenos Frudakis, a world-renowned local artist, sculpted the ten-foot high statue. He created four bronze statues of Philadelphia Hall of Famers.
Look closely at the statue. Notice the attention to detail. Carlton is depicted in his pitching stance, a testament to his skill. The statue captures his intensity.
“Lefty” pitched for six different teams between 1965 and 1988. His greatest achievements were with the Phillies. In 1994, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Steve Carlton Statue celebrates this honor. The plinth is inscribed with “STEVE CARLTON. PHILLIES HALL OF FAME PITCHER 1972-1986.”
Frudakis also created statues of Mike Schmidt and Robin Roberts. These are also located at Citizens Bank Park. The Mike Schmidt statue is at the Southwest entrance. The Robin Roberts statue is at the Southeast entrance.
The Veterans Stadium Liberty Bell is another landmark. It’s near the Southwest entrance. It was refurbished in 2019. The bell was originally installed at Veterans Stadium in 1983. It was removed in 2003.
