Built as part of the East German church construction program the Sternkirche stands before you. A testament to faith during a divided Germany it opened in 1990. This octagonal church isn’t named for its shape. Instead it’s named for the neighborhood Am Stern meaning ‘at the star’. This refers to the star-shaped intersection of paths near the former Stern hunting lodge. Its design evokes a star. The church’s layout symbolizes the community’s gathering and outreach. Imagine people from all directions converging here. Then radiating out to share their faith. The interior is remarkable. Cottbus artist S Mertens contributed the stained glass. It depicts the nativity scene. A relief behind the altar shows the resurrected Christ meeting Mary Magdalene. A subtle cross is integrated into the design. A Schuke organ from Potsdam itself sits near the altar. It’s a smaller instrument but perfectly suited to the church’s intimate space. Tragically a fire in 1997 almost completely destroyed the Sternkirche. A faulty electrical system caused the blaze. The church was rebuilt however. A festive service marked its reopening on December 13 1998. The Sternkirche a symbol of resilience faith and community stands as a beacon in Potsdam. It invites all to experience its quiet beauty and spiritual strength. Its story is one of unwavering faith in the face of adversity a poignant reminder of hope and rebirth.
