Ross S. Sterling High School opened as a junior/senior high school in 1965. It included grades 7 through 12. The campus had air-conditioning. This was a new feature for HISD facilities. Sterling had a mirror twin campus. It was James Madison Jr./Senior High School. It opened at the same time.
Sterling became a senior high school in the 1968-1969 school year. It exclusively served grades 10 through 12.
In 1967, radio station KILT held a contest. Each school submitted paper entries with the school name. The school submitting the most paper won. Ross Sterling won a school dance sponsored by KILT. The band Southwest F.O.B. played at the dance.
Sterling’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps was established in May 1970. Many graduates have served in the United States Armed Forces.
The current Sterling High School campus opened in 2016. It offers 237000 square feet of space. The campus cost 72 million dollars. The onsite hangar has 7100 square feet of space. The three-story building can accommodate 1600 to 1800 students.
Sterling High School is home to HISD’s aviation magnet program. Students take FAA-approved courses. They can get up to 30 hours of flight time. Then, students can take the FAA written exam. In 2000, the magnet program had 200 students.
In 2013, Principal Mitchell said about 40% of Sterling graduates directly enter the workforce. The remainder go to the military or colleges. Mitchell noted many Sterling students from the 1960s never attended college. This is why some alumni have a strong passion for the school.
The student body enjoys Homecoming. Mitchell stated that it is like Mardi Gras for a week long.
Sterling serves several Houston neighborhoods. These include South Park, Garden Villas, and Gulf Meadows. Two Houston Housing Authority complexes are zoned to Sterling. They are Long Drive Townhomes and Sweetwater Point.
Sterling High School requires school uniforms.
Sterling High School has many notable alumni. These include gospel singer Yolanda Adams and NBA player Clyde Drexler.
Sterling High School has a dedicated faculty. There are 82 professional educators. They average 12 years of teaching experience. They have been part of the Sterling family for an average of 8 years.
