Bobbing gently on the Elbe these enigmatic figures greet us. These are the Stelzenläufer sculptures. They are also known as the Buoy Men. Four wooden figures stand serene on buoys. They are a remarkable sight in Hamburg.

Created by artist Stephan Balkenhol in 1993 these unique sculptures are made from oak. Each figure and base is a single piece of wood. They stand 240 meters tall. Each weighs nine tons. Imagine the craftsmanship involved in creating such monumental artworks.

The Stelzenläufer are more than just statues. They symbolize a fascinating contradiction. They bob uncontrollably on the water. Yet their expressions remain stoically calm. Balkenhol deliberately created this ambiguity. He wanted viewers to interpret the sculptures’ meaning. He said his sculptures do not tell stories. Their secrets are for the viewer to discover.

Every autumn the Stelzenläufer are brought ashore. They spend the winter in the Stackmeisterei. This is a workshop on the Finkenwerder river island. There they receive a little upkeep. They return to their watery perches in March. This careful annual maintenance ensures their longevity. These sculptures grace Hamburg’s waterscapes for seven months each year.

There are four locations for the Stelzenläufer. You can find them near Övelgönne in Altona in the Serrahn in Bergedorf on the Outer Alster Lake and near Harburg. So keep your eyes peeled for these unique Hamburg landmarks during your stay.

Their simple design and serene expressions create a unique atmosphere. They seem to observe the bustling city life with quiet dignity. The Stelzenläufer sculptures in Hamburg are a must-see. They offer a blend of art and nature. They also provide a moment of contemplation amidst the urban landscape. They are a testament to the artistry and enduring presence of Stephan Balkenhol’s work.
