Once known as “Dodge City,” the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly stands as a testament to Detroit’s automotive legacy. This Michigan factory has been churning out trucks since 1938. It is owned and operated by Stellantis.
The Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly spans 86.8 acres. The massive facility covers 3,310,000 square feet. Around 3,518 people were employed here in 2023.
Let’s rewind a bit. In 1949, Warren Stamping opened nearby adding to the automotive hub. Then, in 1953, the Mound Road Engine plant began operations just south of Eight Mile Road in Detroit.
Interestingly, a Sherwood Assembly once stood near the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly. It closed in the late 1970s. Chrysler stopped making Dodge Medium and Heavy Duty trucks then.
From 1987 to 2011, the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly produced Dodge Dakotas. Over 2.75 million of these vehicles rolled off the line. In 2015, it became the exclusive home of the Ram 1500 Rebel.
The factory saw a US$1 billion investment to produce the revived Jeep Wagoneer. This upgrade was completed in 2020. There was a plan in 2018 to move Ram Heavy Duty production from Mexico to the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly. But in 2021, Stellantis decided to keep Heavy Duty production in Mexico.
Not all news has been positive. In August 2024, there were announcements of potential layoffs. Up to 2,450 workers at the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly could lose their jobs as Ram 1500 Classic production ended.
Over the years, the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly has produced a variety of vehicles. These include the Dodge A-Series, B-Series Pickup, and C-Series Pickup. Also, the Dodge D-Series Pickup, M Series motorhome chassis, and W-Series Pickup including the Power Wagon were produced here. The Dodge Ramcharger, Plymouth Trailduster, Dodge Dakota, and Dodge Ram are also on the list. The Dodge T-, V-, and W-Series trucks from 1939 to 1947 were made here. Military vehicles like the Dodge M37 and VC, WC, VF, and WF series also came from this plant. The Mitsubishi Raider and Ram Dakota were also assembled here.
Today, the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly continues to play a significant role in the automotive industry.
