The current monastery, opened in 1836, is actually the latest in a long line of structures on this sacred ground. Driven out during the Crusades, the Carmelites returned in 1631, only to face further displacement. The monastery we see today replaced an older one destroyed by Napoleon’s troops and later demolished by Abdullah Pasha. Inside, the church’s dome tells vibrant stories from the Bible.
