Why do you think this stark, octagonal tower, the Stella Maris Lighthouse, is closed to the public? It’s not just to keep curious tourists out. The Stella Maris Lighthouse isn’t just a beacon for ships. It’s nestled within an active Israeli Navy base. This beacon we see today, casting its light for nearly 30 nautical miles, wasn’t here when the Carmelites first built their monastery nearby in the 17th century. Its story is one of destruction and rebirth. It all started with Abdullah Pasha, the ruler of Acre. He wanted a summer palace and didn’t have much respect for history. He demolished the old Carmelite monastery, using its very stones to build his palace. Part of that palace? You guessed it, a lighthouse. It wasn’t the one we see now, but it marked the beginning of the Stella Maris Lighthouse’s association with this spot. Years later, after wars and restorations, the current lighthouse was built, its beam first cutting through the night in 1928. The Stella Maris Lighthouse is a silent sentinel of the sea, its history intertwined with conflict, religion, and the ever-present power of the sea.
