This solemn stone speaks volumes. Don’t you think? This is the Stèle UNC-AFN in Lille. More than just a monument it’s a poignant tribute. It stands as a silent testament to the sacrifices made during the conflicts in North Africa Indochina Korea and other foreign operations.

The Stèle UNC-AFN was unveiled on December 2nd 2007. It’s a striking piece. A rough block of Soignies stone is dramatically cantilevered over a granite slab. Two plaques adorn the stone. One honors the victims of these conflicts. The other bears the emblem of the Union Nationale des Combattants. The granite base displays the AFN veterans’ symbol. The city’s coat of arms is also there. A symbol of municipal support for this memorial. The skilled hands of Mr Delecolle a stonemason from Ronchin crafted this masterpiece.

The inauguration was a moving ceremony. It followed a religious service at the Sacré Cœur church. Twenty-nine flags formed a sea of color. Many attended. The sous-préfet the mayor city officials and association leaders were there. A military band played. The first wreath was laid by Christian Gremont and René Pillain. Both were severely wounded in Algeria. Their presence made the event especially poignant.

Speeches recalled the harsh conditions of these conflicts. They emphasized the heavy toll in human lives. One speaker described the stèle as a landmark in their native soil. It reminds us of those who left to fulfill their duty. Many did not return. The mayor had to visit grieving families. He delivered the devastating news of the loss of their sons and husbands. The stèle represents the suffering of those young men. They were thrust into adulthood too soon. They faced impossible challenges.

The mayor also mentioned that the French army remained deployed worldwide. This included missions in Lebanon Darfur Côte d’Ivoire Afghanistan Kosovo and other conflict zones. He emphasized their mission to spread French values of liberty equality and fraternity. He urged reflection on peace. A precious commodity to be fought for above hatred. This powerful memorial serves as a reminder of this ongoing struggle. The Stèle UNC-AFN a lasting tribute to courage sacrifice and the enduring need for peace.
