Behold this towering monument. The Stele of Seti II stands before you. It whispers tales of a pharaoh’s power and the gods he revered.

This Stele of Seti II was commissioned by Seti II. It is located in Karnak. Specifically, it is on the tribune of the quay of Karnak Temple Complex.

Seti II ruled during a tumultuous time. He ascended to the throne around 1200 BC. His reign was marked by dynastic intrigue. A rival king named Amenmesse even challenged his authority. Despite these challenges, Seti II managed to reclaim his throne.

Look closely at the stele’s carvings. They depict Seti II in ritual gestures for the gods. Notice the kilt he wears. It is decorated with a panther head and uraei. The uraei are cobras.

Seti II’s crown is elaborate. It features ram’s horns, feathers, uraei, and solar discs. These elements are endowed with symbolic significance. In his left hand, he holds a stick. A divine image once topped it.

The statue shows the king striding. He wears an enormous crown. It combines the Lower Egyptian crown and an Atef crown. His shendyt kilt features a belt and girdle. They show a panther head, sun-disk, and uraei cobras. The King carries a standard. It bears an image of the god Amun.

This Stele of Seti II is not alone. The Louvre has an identical statue of Seti II. These statues likely framed the entrance to a chapel. This chapel was in the first courtyard of the Temple of Amun in Karnak. The sacred boats of the Theban triad were housed here. The triad consists of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. They represent father, mother, and son.

During a great annual festival, the boats were carried in procession. They traveled along the rivers to the other great Theban temple. That temple is in Luxor.

Seti II’s reign, though short, left its mark. He completed decorations in his grandfather Ramesses II’s temple. He also worked in Karnak. There, he oversaw a new way station for the holy barks. He also did work in the Mut temple.

The Stele of Seti II serves as a reminder. It shows the king presenting himself to the population. He is engaged in ritual gestures for the gods. It immortalizes his image for eternity.

Consider the power and the pageantry. The Stele of Seti II stands as a testament to a pharaoh’s legacy. It connects us to the religious heart of ancient Thebes. Let’s carry this image with us as we continue our tour.
