Picture this tranquil scene. Before you lies Steinfurths Diek a man-made lake nestled in Hamburg’s Billstedt district. This isn’t just any body of water. Steinfurths Diek holds centuries of history within its depths. Its name originates from a historical stone ford a shallow crossing in the Glinder Au stream. This stream provided the water for Steinfurths Diek. A natural rise in the land a Diek ran parallel to the stream creating a natural shallow point.

Steinfurths Diek’s story begins in the 16th century. The Glinder Au was dammed here to power a mill. For almost 400 years this mill produced dyes and tanning agents. An Englishman later purchased the mill. He transitioned production to pharmaceuticals before World War I. Sadly the machinery was sold during wartime. The water power of Steinfurths Diek fell silent after that.

But the story of Steinfurths Diek isn’t just about mills. The surrounding Steinfurth forest park is a haven for wildlife. Birds such as kingfishers and grey herons thrive here. Rare butterflies and dragonflies like the map butterfly and the banded demoiselle inhabit this rich ecosystem. Steinfurths Diek itself is a haven for fish. Eels carp tench crucian carp and pond mussels all call it home. However angling is only permitted for members of a local angling club.

There’s more to this idyllic scene. A fish ladder runs alongside the dam. Its a series of concrete pools. Each is 3 meters wide 1 meter long and 1 meter deep. The drop between pools is about 23 centimeters. However environmental groups raised concerns in 2005. They stated that the design was unsuitable for eels and minnows. Even agile salmonids struggled to navigate its short approach.

Steinfurths Diek has seen efforts for preservation. In 2004 a proposal was made to designate the area a natural monument. In the 1970s a large area surrounding Steinfurths Diek was developed into a park. This transformation was inspired by a similar project in Oejendorfer Park. Today Steinfurths Diek serves as a beautiful recreational area and a testament to Hamburg’s natural heritage. It’s a place where nature and history intertwine creating a tranquil escape in the heart of the city. A place where the past whispers to the present. A place called Steinfurths Diek.
