Imagine stumbling upon a landscape frozen in time. That is the Steinernes Meer. This nature reserve in Belm near Osnabrück is no ordinary sea. It is a sea of stones.

The Steinernes Meer covers 12.7 hectares. It lies northeast of Osnabrück. This area is within the TERRA.vita Nature and Geopark. The Steinernes Meer sits on the wooded northeast slope of the Gattberg. Here lies a collection of large boulders. Some are up to 3.80 meters high. These boulders journeyed here during the Saale Ice Age. They traveled from Northern Europe.

At the southern edge is the Butterstein. It stands apart from the other boulders. The Butterstein is the largest of these glacial erratics. In prehistoric times, it may have been an Opferstein. This means it might have been a stone used for sacrifices.

The Steinernes Meer has been a protected area since November 8, 1924. The aim was to preserve this collection of boulders. Initially, protection came under the Feld- und Forstpolizeigesetz. This law transferred to the Reichsnaturschutzgesetz in 1937. The effective date of the order changed to August 7, 1937. Today, the Osnabrück district is the responsible lower nature conservation authority.

Take a moment to appreciate the Steinernes Meer. Picture the immense forces of nature that brought these stones here. Envision the ancient rituals that might have taken place around the Butterstein. This unique landscape offers a glimpse into both geological history. It offers a glimpse into human history. The Steinernes Meer is a testament to the power of time and nature.
