On a reddish stone plinth, a magnificent ibex stands proudly at the Steinbock Statue. This isn’t just any ibex. It’s larger than life, a powerful bronze figure overlooking a fork in the path. The Steinbock Statue captures the animal in a watchful pose. The muscled form and alert stance speak to the ibex’s strength and resilience in its mountainous home. The Steinbock Statue arrived in Berlin in 1959. It was originally placed near the bison enclosure. Heinrich Dathe, the Tierpark director, had admired the sculpture in Prague Zoo and acquired it for Berlin’s Tierpark Friedrichsfelde. Later, the Steinbock Statue had to be moved to make way for a giant deer sculpture. It was then placed in front of the Tierpark’s administration building, perched upon a concrete pillar. Finally, in 2004, the Steinbock Statue found its current home. It now resides in the European mountain animal complex, its bronze form complemented by the natural stone pedestal. The reddish stone, possibly Rochlitz Porphyry, evokes the rocky terrain of the ibex’s natural habitat, enhancing the overall presentation of this magnificent artwork by Vladimír Koštoval.
