Gazing at the tranquil waters of Steinbergsee, can you imagine it filled with tons of sediment? Here in the heart of Berlin’s Steinbergpark, in the Reinickendorf district, lies Steinbergsee. This small lake, barely a hectare in size, plays a vital role in the local ecosystem. Steinbergsee is fed by the Packereigraben, a stream that carries runoff from the city’s rainwater drainage system. This runoff, unfortunately, brings with it sand and other materials that settle at the bottom of Steinbergsee. Imagine the accumulation over time. In 2012, a specialized cleaning effort was undertaken to remove almost 3,000 tons of sediment. A gentle suction-dredging method was used to minimize disturbance to the lake’s environment. A mobile dewatering plant processed the sediment right here on site, restoring Steinbergsee to its former glory. The lake itself is approximately 200 meters long and 50 meters wide. It’s nestled at the foot of Steinberg, the small hill that gives the park its name. From the Steinberg, a charming, man-made waterfall cascades into Steinbergsee. The waterfall’s water is actually pumped from the lake itself, creating a continuous, refreshing cycle. At the base of the waterfall, a terraced area invites visitors to relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere of Steinbergsee.
