High on the Steinberg, we overlook Erfurt. This peak, though not towering, offers a unique vantage point. The Steinberg itself may lack prominent structures, but its views connect us to a turbulent history, particularly that of Erfurt’s Jewish community. For centuries, Erfurt was a significant center of Jewish life, scholarship, and unfortunately, also antisemitism.

The Old Synagogue, nestled in the heart of Erfurt, stands as a testament to this rich past. Dating back to the 11th century, it’s one of the oldest preserved synagogues in Central Europe. Imagine the bustling Jewish quarter, thriving amidst Christian neighbors. Merchants, bankers, and scholars contributed to Erfurt’s vibrant tapestry. Rabbis like Alexander Suslin ha-Kohen taught and wrote, leaving behind manuscripts that continue to be studied today.

But this coexistence wasn’t always peaceful. In 1221, Jews on their way to the Fifth Crusade were massacred in Erfurt. This foreshadowed the devastating pogrom of 1349. Fueled by the Black Death and accusations of well poisoning, the entire Jewish community was nearly annihilated. The horror echoes across the centuries. Yet, remarkably, Jewish life returned to Erfurt. A new community emerged, rebuilt the synagogue, and thrived once more.

This cycle of destruction and rebirth repeated itself throughout history. In 1453, Jews were expelled from Erfurt, their synagogue turned into an armory. They returned after the Napoleonic Wars, only to face the horrors of the Holocaust. The Great Synagogue, a symbol of this renewed community, was destroyed on Kristallnacht. But even after this darkest chapter, Jewish life returned to Erfurt, demonstrating remarkable resilience. From our perch on the Steinberg, we can reflect on this complex history, the echoes of which still resonate in the city below. The story of Erfurt’s Jewish community is a testament to both the enduring strength of faith and the persistent struggle against intolerance.
