Picture this a small coastal town nestled beside Moreton Bay. This is Steiglitz Queensland. It’s a place where history whispers on the breeze. It’s a place where sugar cane once swayed in the wind.

Steiglitz’s story begins long ago. German immigrants settled here in the 1870s. They brought with them their traditions and their faith. Lutheran services were first held in homes. Later a church was built in 1882. A new church replaced the old one in 1908. This church was renovated in 1930.

At the heart of Steiglitz lies Rocky Point Sugar Mill. This mill established in 1878 is one of the oldest in Australia. It’s still privately owned by the Heck family. Five generations have worked this land. They’ve witnessed the growth of the mill and the changes in the town. The mill also plays a key role in generating electricity from renewable sources making it an energy-efficient wonder.

Getting the sugar cane to the mill wasn’t always easy. The low-lying swampy land presented challenges. That’s why in 1924 a tramway was built. This tramway ran from the mill to Norwell. A steam locomotive from John Fowler & Co in England hauled the cane. Sadly frequent flooding and the rise of motorised transport led to its closure in 1951. The locomotive found a new home. It was even displayed at Dreamworld theme park before ending up at the Beenleigh Historical Village.

Steiglitz is more than just a sugar mill and a historic tramway. It’s a community. It has a bustling bowls club a preschool and kindergarten. There are also marinas like Horizon Shores and Rudy Maas. Several parks like Cabbage Tree Point Conservation Park offer beautiful views and tranquility.

Steiglitz has changed much. It remains a captivating place. Its history is woven into the fabric of this coastal town. From its German heritage to its industrious sugar mill. Steiglitz tells a unique story of resilience and transformation. A story you can feel in the salty air and in the very soil beneath your feet. It’s a story waiting to be discovered in this unassuming corner of Queensland.
